This listing is for a Altar Hanging, celebrating Epona, the Great Mare the Celtic goddess of Horses, of the land, fertility and abundance, who was later adopted by the Romans.  

According to legend Epona was born from a man and a mare and thus became foremost the Goddess of Mares and foals.  Her image still survives in stables and barns across Europe.  Quite often a little statue could be found in a little carved out niche.

Epona was not only the protector of horses, leading them into the underworld when their fleeting time had passed.  She also bestowed abundance and fertility to the land, often being referred to as an extension of the Great Mother.

The Altar Hanging has been made by us using a natural wooden slice with the bark still attached, the tile measures between 9 to 10 cm.

We are based in Wiltshire in the UK, near to our Spiritual home of Avebury, the White Horse which was dedicated to Epona and a short distance from Stone Henge. All the items you see on our pages are handmade by us.
