This listing for Iris the rainbow goddess and messenger to the gods.
Our representation of Iris measures around 6 cm in height, she is sculpted from Black clay, she has been brushed lightly with silver paint giving her an almost chiselled stone affect. She has long hair and over her thighs sits a caduceus, the symbol of messengers. Iris has outstretched wings and is naked, in her rawest feminine form and there is a Moonstone set within her tummy. White being one of the colours of the rainbow and for its divination and psychism abilities.
Iris is an errand running messenger to the Olympian gods, who travels by rainbow (the quickest form of transport of course!). It was once believed that if you threw a Drachma (Greek Currency) into a rainbow you could communicate with anyone, anywhere using Iris' rainbow and messaging powers.
Some still pray to her today with the hopes she till carry their voices and intent to the celestial gods. Others might pray for rain, for travels on water or flight. Offering her figs, cakes, wheat or honey in return to show their gratitude and devotion.
As this piece is handmade, it is important to point out that each piece can vary slightly, but we believe this adds to the magic and makes each and everyone that little bit more special!
