Welcome to our listing for Medusa.
This representation of Medusa measures around 6 cm in height, she is sculpted from beige clay, she has been painted lightly with paint giving her an almost chiselled stone affect. Medusa is shown here simply with her snake like curls and snake coiled tail, naked. In her rawest feminine form. There is a red jasper gemstone set within her tummy. We choose red jasper not only for its aesthetic colour (a colour representative of the snake), but also as red jasper is a stone known for bringing strength, stamina and courage, all the properties associated with Medusa.
Now, depending on what origin story you lean to Medusa is not always seen as a goddess but nevertheless holds a special place on many witches and wiccans altars.
One version of the tale of Medusa, was that she was a priestess, a beautiful woman who attracted the unwanted attention of Poseidon. It was in Athena's temple that Poseidon 'assaulted' Medusa. Medusa, although the victim, and this was not her fault, was punished and turned into the version of a gorgon we recognise today.
The other tale is she was one of 3 sisters, daughters of the gods Phorkys and Keto. Medusa was the only one of the Gorgon sisters to be born in human form. A powerful queen that had the ability to turn gods into stone with her stare. When she was beheaded by Perseus, Pegasus and Chrysaor were born from her blood. Some believe she was later fully restored by the Great Mother.
As this piece is handmade, it is important to point out that each piece can vary slightly, but we believe this adds to the magic and makes each and everyone that little bit more special!
